Selain itu, di luar angkasa juga tidak ada objek yang dapat digunakan sebagai pemantul cahaya. Oleh karena itu, cahaya akan terus melaju secara lurus sampai sampai di titik temu dengan sebuah objek.
Sebagaimana dilansir dari livescience.com, hal ini juga diakibatkan oleh adanya paradoks Olbers. Pada dasarnya, teori ini menyebutkan bahwa alam semesta berkembang dengan adanya proses ekspansi melalui kecepatan yang melebihi kecepatan cahaya.
Melalui ekspansi alam semesta, banyak objek luar angkasa yang memiliki jarak cukup jauh. Kondisi ini menyebabkan cahaya objek-objek tersebut tidak sampai ke bumi.
Maka dari itu, benda-benda bercahaya di luar angkasa “merenggang” sehingga berubah menjadi gelombang mikro, gelombang infra merah, dan gelombang radio. Elemen ini tidak dapat dilihat secara langsung oleh manusia dan menyebabkan luar angkasa terlihat gelap.

Pada saat siang hari, cahaya matahari berinteraksi dengan atmosfer bumi. Berbagai macam molekul yang terdapat di atmosfer menyebabkan cahaya matahari tersebar ke segala arah. Hal ini membuat langit terlihat biru di siang hari dan fenomena ini dikenal dengan penyebaran Rayleigh.
Kendati demikian, luar angkasa yang dikenal sebagai ruang hampa udara tidak memiliki atmosfer. Maka dari itu, luar angkasa menjadi gelap karena tidak ada molekul yang mampu menyebarkan cahaya.
