Peter, Bocah Lelaki Pengagum Papanya
Dalam buku Peter, Risa mengkisahkan sosok sahabatnya yang ingin terlihat tegas dan kuat saat bersama Papa, tapi lembut di sisi Mama tanpa pantauan Papa. Peter menjadi kebanggaan Mama karena anak laki-laki. Namun, dia sekaligus menjadi aib bagi sang Papa karena kekurangan fisik Peter yang dianggap pendek. Bocah Belanda yang dikenal Risa jahil dan suka menyuruh ini digambarkan sebagai sosok anak lelaki yang memandang papanya sebagai pahlawan dan keinginan dirinya di masa depan.
Peter van Gils, nama lengkapnya, semasa hidupnya dikenal sebagai anak tentara Belada yang nakal. Namun saat bersama mamanya, dia menjadi manja karena kelembutan mamanya mampu meluluhkan keras kepalanya. Risa menggambarkan betapa sedihnya Peter yang merindukan mamanya. Saat malam natal, mereka menonton film yang akhir ceritanya membuat Peter menangis merindukan mamanya yang entah ke mana.
Buku Peter menunjukan bahwa Peter hanya ingin Papa bangga memiliki dirinya sebagai anaknya dan tentunya ingin hidup bersama Mama tercintanya. Peter menjadi contoh sosok anak lelaki yang hanya ingin membanggakan dan dicintai orangtuanya, serta diterima segala kekurangannya.
Hendrick, Anak Manja Penuh Misteri
Hendrick Konnings agak berbeda dengan sahabat lainnya, Peter, Willam, Janshen. Dirinya hidup jauh dari masa pendudukan Belanda, tepatnya pada 1890-an. Hidup menjadi anak tunggal keluarga botanis, Hendrick menjadi anak yang manja dan meledak-ledak saat emosinya memuncak. Meski keras kepala dan tak mau kalah, Hendrick mencintai mama dan papanya. Walaupun dirinya adalah anak tunggal, dia tak kesepian karena ada orang tua dan sahabat di belakang tembok rumahnya, Hans dan Oma Rose.
Namun, suatu kejadian tragis memaksa Hendrick yang manja menjadi dewasa dalam waktu singkat. Kerumitan keluarganya membuat dirinya yang dulunya dianakemaskan mesti merasa dibuang. Di sini bisa dilihat bahwa Hendrick merupakan anak yang sejatinya merupakan sosok yang bertanggung jawab dan penyayang.
Hendrick merupakan cerita pilu yang harus ditanggung anak tunggal Konnings. Namun selain cerita sedih, buku ini juga menunjukkan kuatnya persahabatan Hendrick dengan Hans. Dalam sisa hidup Hendrick, Hans selalu di sisi sahabatnya. Keduanya tidak pernah terpisahkan bahkan oleh kematian.
Hans, Cucu Kebanggaan Oma Rose
Sebagai sahabat karib Risa yang jago memanggang kue, Hans Joseph Weel punya latar belakang yang rumit. Hans bercerita bagaimana sang Mama bisa hadir di dunia, bagaimana Oma Rose dan mamanya bisa menjadi ibu dan anak serta sahabat karib mamanya. Hans yang masih kecil harus menerima kenyataan untuk hidup berdua saja dengan omanya, tak bertemu dengan orang tua serta saudaranya.
Hidup Hans menjadi lebih bahagia saat bertemu sahabat sehidup dan sematinya, Hendrick. Hans sabar menerima apa adanya sikap manja dan keras kepala Hendrick. Mereka memang ditakdirkan untuk bersama. Setelah kematian kedua sahabat itu, mereka bertemu kembali sambil menunggu sahabat-sahabat mereka lainnya, termasuk Risa.
Buku Hans bukan kisah Hans seorang, tetapi juga merupakan cerita keluarganya, sosok mamanya yang sudah terkubur waktu, serta kebusukan keluarga yang menjadi lawan dalam hidup Hans. Kisah Hans menunjukkan bahwa sikap sabar dan manis Hans tidak bisa menutupi kesedihan yang dirasakan Hans seumur hidupnya.
William, Kambing Hitam Keluarganya
Sosok William Van Kemmen adalah anak kecil yang dituntut dewasa karena kondisi keluarga yang memaksanya. Terlahir di keluarga kaya raya dan mudah mendapatkan segalanya tak membuat William bahagia. Sikap orang tuanya, terutama Mama, membuat anak yang ahli bermain biola itu muak dengan kehidupan glamor dan lingkungan borjuis masa itu.
William harus menjadi sosok lain demi membahagiakan mamanya, menjadi anak Belanda yang arogan dan menurut apapun yang diinginkan Mama. Namun dalam hatinya, William adalah anak yang sederhana dan justru tidak mau terlahir di keluarga kaya sehingga dia merasa tak diterima di keluarganya.
Buku ini menampilkan pergolakan batin William dalam pilihan menjadi dirinya sendiri atau anak yang diharapkan orang tuanya. William ditulis Risa untuk menceritakan kehidupan sahabatnya yang merasa tak bahagia, yang justru bahagia di kehidupan setelah kematian, bertemu sahabat-sahabatnya, dan bisa menjadi dirinya sendiri.
Janshen, Pembawa Kegembiraan
Sahabat Risa paling kecil, Jantje Heinrich Janshen, dikenal mudah menangis dan menjadi target kejahilan sahabat-sahabatnya. Dia bernama asli Jantje, tetapi lebih suka dipanggil dengan nama keluarganya, Janshen. Dia merupakan sosok yang mengemaskan dengan gigi ompongnya yang khas dan selalu membawa kebahagiaan, baik saat dia hidup ataupun meninggal.
Janshen sebenarnya tidak tahu fakta yang sebenarnya terjadi di keluarganya. Mengapa orang tua dan dua kakak perempuannya pergi dari rumah? Apa alasan kakaknya, Annabelle, menangis? Janshen masih terlalu muda untuk memahami kebenaran yang terjadi.
