Hendrick Konnings agak berbeda dengan sahabat lainnya, Peter, Willam, Janshen. Dirinya hidup jauh dari masa pendudukan Belanda, tepatnya pada 1890-an. Hidup menjadi anak tunggal keluarga botanis, Hendrick menjadi anak yang manja dan meledak-ledak saat emosinya memuncak. Meski keras kepala dan tak mau kalah, Hendrick mencintai mama dan papanya. Walaupun dirinya adalah anak tunggal, dia tak kesepian karena ada orang tua dan sahabat di belakang tembok rumahnya, Hans dan Oma Rose.
Namun, suatu kejadian tragis memaksa Hendrick yang manja menjadi dewasa dalam waktu singkat. Kerumitan keluarganya membuat dirinya yang dulunya dianakemaskan mesti merasa dibuang. Di sini bisa dilihat bahwa Hendrick merupakan anak yang sejatinya merupakan sosok yang bertanggung jawab dan penyayang.
