Tidak jarang, kondisi setelah perceraian orangtua menyebabkan anak-anak mengalami tekanan psikologis yang berat sejak kecil, seperti kecenderungan untuk menyalahkan diri sendiri, membenci diri sendiri dan orangtua, kehilangan sosok keluarga, bahkan depresi.
Tujuan dari Broken Crayon adalah menyampaikan pesan kepada mereka yang dibesarkan oleh orangtua tunggal bahwa perceraian orangtua tersebut bukanlah akhir, melainkan awal hidup yang baru. Dengan menghargai nilai kekeluargaan lebih awal, kita dapat lebih bersemangat, lebih menghargai teman-teman yang setia, dan menyadari bahwa keberadaan mereka tidaklah sendirian dari sekian anak-anak yang mengalami kisah senasib.
Pada dasarnya, buku ini mengisahkan tentang bagaimana mengapresiasi hidup setelah tantangan dan cobaan, bukan untuk terjebak di masa lalu.
Kisah-kisah mereka untuk menyampaikan tujuan tersebut terdiri dari 10 bab, yaitu Imbas Perpisahan Mereka Kepadaku, Uninvisible Wounds, Dibesarkan oleh Satu, Mimpi Abu-Abu, Pelajaran Hidup, Surat untuk Ayah, The Missing Heart, Girl in Deep Hole, Hormat Terbesar, dan Kehilangan Adalah Tempaan.
Tidak berlebihan jika penulis menganjurkan para pembaca untuk bersiap-siap secara emosi dan mental sebelum membaca kisah perceraian melalui 10 bab tersebut. Kisah-kisah tersebut menunjukkan bagaimana cara anak-anak melihat kehidupan sangat menakjubkan sekaligus memilukan. Sejak kecil mereka melihat orangtua bertengkar, sosok ayah yang menjadi pemabuk, kisah perselingkuhan, atau merelakan orangtua yang telah dipanggil Tuhan.
Menariknya, kisah-kisah tersebut memberikan perspektif yang berbeda untuk memahami kondisi, bukan untuk menghakimi orangtua mereka. Misalnya, dari sisi seorang bapak/ibu yang berjuang sendirian pasca perceraian, memaklumi keputusan cerai orangtua setelah pertengkaran hebat selama bertahun-tahun, atau bahkan melihat sisi lain dari keinginan bapak/ibu untuk menikah lagi. Terlepas setuju atau tidak, para penulis Broken Crayon mengharapkan kebahagiaan bagi semua orang di dalam keluarga kandung mereka.
Oleh karena Broken Crayon adalah karya Zahra Desriani yang merupakan mahasiswi lulusan Desain Komunikasi Visual, pembawaan buku ini menjadi sangat visual dalam mempresentasikan kisah dan kutipan inspiratif.
Transisi setiap bab terdiri dari beberapa kutipan atau pesan inspirasi yang dibingkai oleh desain dan gambar berwarna, indah, dan puitis. Misalnya, pesan untuk mengapresiasi hidup dan percaya kepada Tuhan apa pun yang terjadi. Pembaca tidak akan merasa bosan karena transisi dari cerita dan kutipan bergambar yang tidak kaku serta cara presentasi yang beragam.
Broken Crayon tidak hanya merupakan referensi untuk mereka yang sedang mengalami masalah keluarga atau dibesarkan oleh orangtua tunggal, melainkan untuk mereka semua yang tertarik mengenai kisah-kisah kemanusiaan dan sarana untuk memahami perspektif anak-anak yang kekurangan akan keluarga dan ‘menjadi kuat’ sejak kecil.
Selain itu, terdapat nilai lain dari buku ini yang tak bisa dilupakan, yaitu memahami kenyataan dan realita nasib hidup yang berbeda-beda.
Bagaimanakah orangtua bisa memutuskan untuk bercerai? Mengapa orangtua lebih baik berpisah daripada mempertahankan pernikahan? Apakah orangtua jahat karena telah meninggalkan keluarganya? Walaupun tidak dibahas secara keseluruhan, paling tidak esensi dari pertanyaan-pertanyaan tersebut telah tersentuh.
Selain itu, buku ini dapat menjadi referensi bagi para pasangan yang ingin menyatakan janji setia atau menikah. Berdasarkan data tahun 2016 lalu, setidaknya ada sekitar 350 ribu perceraian di Indonesia. Bila setiap perceraian memiliki seorang anak, maka ada sekitar 175 ribu anak yang berlatar belakang keluarga broken home. Ingat, menikah bukanlah hal yang ringan, melibatkan nyawa si buah hati.
Akan tetapi, perlu dicatat juga bahwa Broken Crayon hanya menampilkan mereka yang sukses melanjutkan hidup setelah perpecahan keluarga. Walaupun sulit, akan lebih baik jika beberapa kisah juga menekankan pada kisah mereka yang masih belum mengatasi persoalan agar lebih dapat menggambarkan realita yang lebih dekat dengan kenyataan dalam menghadapi kondisi broken home.
